Attorney Referrals

At Edwards Kirby, one of the most enjoyable parts of our practice is collaborating with attorneys on a case. We’ve worked with lawyers from almost every county in North Carolina and from more than 30 states across the country.

We enjoy working with other lawyers because we often learn as much from the attorneys who associate us as they do from us. We are typically associated to work on cases that are particularly complex, expensive, or where extensive trial experience is needed.

Often when we’re called, the associating attorney wants our firm to take the case over and handle all aspects from investigation, securing experts, filing pleadings, conducting discovery and trying the case. At other times, lawyers wish to participate in every aspect of the case all the way through settlement or verdict. We’re happy to provide turnkey services and handle all aspects of a case, or to work closely with our colleague lawyers.

While we prefer to become involved in the early stages of a case to help guide it from inception, we have entered cases as trial counsel as late as a few weeks or even days before a trial was to begin. At other times we are engaged to appear at mediation for presentations and negotiation, and if the case is unable to be settled at mediation, we are there to participate as lead counsel going forward.

These arrangements have been beneficial to both referring attorneys and their clients. For example, recent cases in which we were associated late in the case resulted in a $13 million settlement during trial and a $3.75 million settlement on the eve of trial, while another recent case ended early in a $6 million settlement (all available insurance coverage). In all cases, the amounts recovered were millions of dollars beyond what the insurance company had previously offered to referring counsel.

Advantages of associating with Edwards Kirby include:

  • The financial resources to take on complex, expensive litigation.
  • A sterling reputation for winning at trial that can lead to quicker, better and larger settlements with insurance companies.
  • Access to top-notch experts to improve your case.
  • Working with partners John Edwards and David Kirby.

If you are an attorney who does not practice in the field of personal injury or wrongful death, or if you do practice in that area, but have a case that is particularly complex, expensive, or involves an area of law that you are unfamiliar with, we would be happy to discuss it with you to determine whether we can provide added value by co-counseling or acting as lead lawyers. Please call us today at 919-780-5400 to speak with one of our lawyers.
