FAQs
What are the rules about applying for disability benefits after an amputation?
Not everyone who has had an amputation qualifies for Social Security Disability benefits afterward. The Social Security Administration (SSA) states that a patient must have suffered from one of the following types of amputations to qualify for compensation: both hands, one or both lower extremities at or above the ankle, one hand and one lower extremity at or above the ankle, hemipelvectomy, or hip disarticulation. Applicants are required to present medical records at the time of applying.
What do hospitals do with amputated limbs?
In many cases, a patient can sign a waiver at the hospital to give up possession of their limbs to a pathological lab. Patients have the option to donate their limbs to science; however, if they choose not to, their limbs will typically be disposed of by medical facilities under the classification of “medical waste.”
What are the most common accidents that lead to the need for amputation?
Motor vehicle accidents are the most common cause of amputations in the country. Car accidents are also one of the leading causes of injuries in the U.S., meaning that they often result in many amputation injuries and fatalities. Workplace accidents are also a common cause of amputation, especially in agricultural and industrial spaces. Many workplace accidents are a result of inadequate training, lack of PPE, or defective equipment.
